A cigar blending session lets you taste how a cigar comes together, one piece at a time. On October 9, we are hosting one at Smokers Abbey Austin with James and Angela Brown of Black Label Trading Company. Here is what a blending session is, and what to expect if you join us.

What happens at a cigar blending session

Every cigar has three parts. The wrapper is the outer leaf, and it adds flavor and aroma. The binder holds everything together. The filler makes up the heart of the cigar, so it shapes the body and the strength.

A blender chooses each leaf on purpose. Then the blender tests how the leaves work together. As a result, a small change in one component can change the whole cigar.

At a cigar blending session, you taste those pieces yourself. First, you try the components one at a time. Next, you smoke the finished blend. Finally, you notice how the parts combine into something new.

What puritos show you

A purito is a short cigar rolled with a single filler leaf. You smoke one for each filler in the blend, so you taste every leaf on its own. Then you taste how those leaves come together in the finished cigar.

How it works at our dinner

Our Benediction dinner follows the same path. Guests smoke puritos to taste each filler on its own. James explains how Benediction came to be, and guests can ask him questions along the way. Later, we smoke the finished cigar together over dessert.

Benediction is our Smokers Abbey exclusive. It has a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and filler, and it smokes medium to full with earthy, peppery, and creamy notes. You can read more on the Benediction product page.
